Job Description
 
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate with clearly demonstrated expertise in marine natural product chemistry to join our Research Unit. The holder of this post will perform a range of research tasks including extraction, chemical profiling and dereplication of extracts (by mainly LC-MS), followed by activity-guided isolation and structure elucidation of their bioactive molecules by modern analytical methods.

Current research foci of our group encompass discovery of mainly drug leads from coastal and deep-sea marine invertebrates, microorganisms and seaweeds;  marine metabolomics; and chemical ecology. The successful candidate will be involved in various projects in those directions. Assistance in the collection of marine biomass, supervision/training of postgraduate/undergraduate students, participation in teaching and preparations of third-party funding proposals will be expected The occupant will interact and collaborate with a broad range of scientific disciplines.

The research unit Marine Natural Product Chemistry is equipped with state-of-the-art chemical facilities including UPLC-QTOF-MS-coupled with DESI Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS, accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) system, FT-IR, polarimeter and related databases, as well as microbiology/biotechnology facilities and over 50 in vitro biological assays. Our in-house microbial culturing facilities span from small to large-scale (300L fermenter), as well as access to sequencing facilities. GEOMAR has full access to high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities at the Chemistry Department of Kiel University. We are members of several excellence clusters, such as The Future Ocean, and several EU research consortia.

Qualifications required:
• A diploma and a strong PhD in marine natural products chemistry
• Demonstrated competence and preferably several years of post-doc experience in dereplication / chemical profiling of marine natural products by LC-MS, GC-MS, NMR and others
• Extensive competence and experience in purification of diverse types of natural products (by HPLC and other chromatographic methods)
• Demonstrated and preferably several years of post-doc experience in structure elucidation of marine natural products by high field NMR, HRMS, UV, IR, X-ray, and other methods
• Proficiency in commercial and in house databases
• Scientific publication in high-ranking journals and dissemination of results at conferences
• Demonstrated experience in writing publications, conference papers and research proposals
• Fluency in spoken and written English and excellent oral and written communication skills 
• Strong organizational skills, prioritization of multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines
• Excellent project and laboratory management skills in multiple tasks
• Capability of creative- and critical thinking, independency, decision making, problem solving with discretion, self-motivation and curiosity.

Scuba diving licence and some marine sample collection experience, as well as a full driving licence are highly desirable.

The position is available for a funding period of two years, starting 1st April 2018 (or as soon as possible thereafter). The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class 13 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. The position can be split, flexible working times are possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with Section 2 Paragraph 1 of The Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract (German WissZeitVG).
